Caregiver: Colony Manager
Responsibilities: Dependent on locality. Feed and water daily, provide bowls, food, clean area of trash, disposable food containers, etc. Monitor health of cats. Monitor arrival of new cats or absence of cats. Provide vet care when required/needed. Maintain vet records. Recruit backup caregivers. Assist with TNR efforts for your colony to ensure all cats are pay/neutered.
- Experience preferred: Some exposure to ferals. Should have a colony identified that needs TNR.
- Training Required: Short course on ferals and caregiving.
Substitute Caregiver
Responsibilities: Work with primary caregiver to establish schedule and/or arrangements to care for colony in the caregiver’s absence. Feed/water daily. Provide food or arrange to get food from caregiver. Clean area of trash, disposable food containers, etc. Monitor health of cats. Monitor arrival of new cats or absence of cats. Report changes to the primary caregiver. Provide emergency vet care if needed.
- Experience preferred: Some exposure to ferals. May or may not have a colony identified that needs a substitute caregiver.
- Training Required: Short course on ferals and caregiving.
Transportation of Cats for TNR
Responsibilities: Transport cats in personal vehicle to vet (normally between 7 and 9 a.m.). Pick up cats at vet and return to holding area or caregiver. Driving time depends on location of vet. Currently, the Spay/Neuter Clinic in Gloucester is used for cats TNR’d under PetSmart grant. Flexibility is key in this position unless participating in scheduled clinics.
- Training Required: Short course on ferals and basic cat safety.
General Transportation
Responsibilities: Pick up and deliver (using personal vehicle) food, traps, or other supplies that may be available or needed by caregivers, cat transporters or others working with or for Operation Cat Snip. Flexibility is a positive. Must have valid driver license and insurance for vehicle.
Large/Heavy Cargo Transportation
Responsibilities: Transport large and/or heavy items (using personal vehicle), such as shelters, pallets of food, tables or booths for events. Only needed occasionally. No training requirements. Must have valid driver license and insurance for vehicle.
Trapper
Responsibilities: Trap cats for caregivers or other identified areas. Trapping generally is done in evenings or early mornings, depending on weather, seasons and availability to the property. Traps are provided but some transportation may be required (see General Transportation and Transportation of Cats for TNR descriptions). Trapping locations vary but may include residential areas, apartment complexes, office complexes, etc. Trappers may have to work alone, depending on availability of others. Traps are provided by Operation Cat Snip.
- Experience preferred: Some exposure to feral cats.
- Training Required: Short course on ferals, basic cat safety and trapping.
Respond to Public Questions/Calls
Respond to inquiries to Operation Cat Snip on feral cat issues, starting colonies, municipality ordinances, etc. Provide information on Operation Cat Snip activities, services, etc.
- Experience preferred: Good communication and writing skills. Personal computer with internet and email access.
- Training Required: Short course on Operation Cat Snip services and feral cat issues.
Education/Training
Train volunteers on TNR, as general cat handling and welfare. Educate the public on TNR procedures and successes though seminars as well as one-on-one meetings. Develop training manuals and materials.
- Experience preferred: Good communication and writing skills. Computer skills: PowerPoint and Word or equivalent.
